Williams Lake began as a Shuswap villiage. Settlers were attracted by the Cariboo's grasslands and took up ranching. After the gold rush waned in the late 1870's they had to drive their cattle 200 miles to Ashcroft to be shipped by rail to markets.

The villiage of Williams Lake was incorporated in 1929. Throughout the 1930's and 40's, Williams Lake is still a major cattle shipping point with over 43,000 head of cattle sold though the stockyards each year.

Wiliams Lake has a unique civic holiday. Wrestling Day, celebrated on January 2nd, began in the late 30's when merchants Alistar Mackenzie and Sid Western, having no customers the day after New Years declared the holiday, closed the shops and went home.

Williams Lake has grown to be the main commercial, administrative and supply centre for the entire central Cariboo-Chilcotin regions.
